brühl – manufactured since 1948
The family business brühl was established in 1948 as a mattress and upholstery manufacture. From 1971 on, a new production hall and office building was constructed. The structure is harmoniously integrated into the surrounding countryside and houses a modern and particularly eco-friendly production. brühl focusses on the manufacture of sustainable, premium-quality seating concepts rendered in a unique and distinctive design. The company is aligned to both social and ecological requirements and translates these into contemporary, innovative, and versatile seating furniture.
Imaginative, individual, ecological, adaptable – brühl’s designs are as multifaceted as life itself. With creative director Kati Meyer-Brühl at the helm, brühl develops furniture that speaks a universally understood design language. The spectrum ranges from poetic exuberance and elegant or decorative creations to pieces with geometrical clarity and transparency. Whether used as striking single accent pieces or displayed in the form of artfully arranged ensembles – furniture by brühl is adaptable and flexible, and takes the needs of the people who use it as well as environmental concerns into account. The timeless aesthetics and durability of the furniture ensure that each piece is a decorative long-term investment that is suitable for home as well as public interiors.
brühl’s designs are very well-known and in high demand beyond Europe and have won more than one hundred renowned national and international awards. Designs by Kati Myer-Brühl have been presented at an international design exhibition in the context of the Venice Biennale of Architecture 2016.
Furniture makers since 1948
Originally founded as a mattress and upholstered furniture manufacturing business, the family-owned company brühl has focused on the production of high-quality, durable and particularly ecological and sustainable designer furniture for the past 30 years. The company began to build a new factory at its headquarters in Bad Steben/Carlsgrün, Germany, in 1971 which it then extended in several construction stages until 1996. All of the buildings are designed with the aspect of ecological and environmental compatibility in mind and blend in well with the surrounding landscape. Over the years, the company has taken further measures to make its headquarters even more environmentally-friendly.
Our employees work at light-flooded work stations that offer optimum health and safety conditions. They also enjoy a high level of autonomy: All of the manufacturing steps are structured in a way that prevents repetitive movement sequences to ensure the well-being of our staff.
As a forward-looking employer, brühl qualifies its employees and offers future-proof, attractive jobs. We have a very low staff turnover; many of our employees have been with the company for decades.
This means that their expertise and experience are retained long-term and ensures a high motivation level and well-functioning, efficient procedures.
Carefully crafted, durable comfort
brühl provides contemporary, creative living solutions for discerning customers. A piece of furniture made by brühl is a particularly durable and versatile companion whose innovative design, precisely crafted finishes and luxurious comfort will never fail to please. Many customers therefore decide to buy a brühl product again when they are considering their next purchase, because brühl stands for outstanding design and quality.
Our furniture is manufactured by experienced, highly motivated staff that enjoy the highest possible level of autonomy. Our manufacturing processes are well-organised and efficient thanks to integrated production steps, a sensible mix of high-tech and manual finishing and an environmentally-friendly working environment that prioritises the health and safety of our employees.
This guarantees that the exceptional quality of each individual piece of furniture we manufacture remains consistent – every day, from the construction of the virtually indestructible solid wood base frame to the meticulous positioning of the – mostly removable – high-quality fabric and leather covers, the careful final inspection and our own delivery service.
Helping to save the Blue Planet
With our particularly durable, sustainably manufactured furniture made from eco-friendly materials, we are making a contribution to the conservation of our planet’s finite resources. We intend to make furniture “lighter” in terms of our overall resource consumption and want to make sure that it “can be used for longer and in a better way” (Wuppertal Institute).
That is why all of our manufacturing steps throughout the entire product life-cycle take ecological, sustainability and health-related aspects into account. For example, our values lie far below the legally permitted employee exposure values for adhesives; in fact, they are almost below the detection threshold. All of the materials we use are also carefully examined with regard to their environmental compatibility and durability to ensure that our furniture has a particularly long life-span. Some of our designs are fully recyclable. We also recycle any leftover materials. We deliver our furniture with company-owned Euro VI standard vehicles and reduce unnecessary journeys down to a minimum. Due to the environmental compatibility of the individual components, the disposal of our furniture causes few environmental burdens.
brühl sources the renewable resource wood from certified sustainably managed forests (FSC), and wherever possible locally.
The skilled craftsmanship with which our exquisite saddler-grade leather covers are finished guarantees lasting value. Our leather suppliers use salt-free preservation techniques that save water. Our Oliva leather, for example, consists of hides that have been tanned with the aid of plant-based methods and therefore almost completely without the use of chemical substances. When it comes to the textiles we use, we are also always on the lookout for even more environmentally-friendly solutions in cooperation with our sustainability-focused suppliers. All of the fabrics we use comply with the Oeko-Tex® standard or bear the EU-Flower eco-certificate. Due to the high quality of the fabrics and the careful and precise finishing of our covers, our seating furniture is exceptionally durable and has a particularly long life-cycle. Much of the furniture also features removable covers, which essentially doubles its life-span.
In 2002, the company’s environmental commitment earned brühl the Bavarian Environment Medal for special contributions towards environmental protection and regional development. In 2009, brühl was the first furniture manufacturer in Germany to be awarded the “Blue Angel” eco-label for particular eco-friendliness. brühl has also been a certified carbon neutral manufacturer since 2017.
